Our Pastor

The pastor of our church is Pieter van Huyssteen who was born and bred in South Africa from where, at age 39, he brought his family over to New Zealand.

Most of Pieter’s initial studies were completed in South Africa and Germany, whereas later development and training happened in New Zealand.

For the greater part of his working life, Pieter has been a lecturer in various institutions and subjects in South Africa and New Zealand where he taught:

  • Semitic Languages (Biblical Hebrew & Aramaic, Assyrian & Babylonian, and Ugaritic – an ancient Canaanite language);
  • Primary Latin, Arabic, German, and French
  • New Testament Greek; Bible Interpretation; Church History; Old and New Testament Survey; Old and New Testament Exegesis; and Christian Teaching.

From February 2006 to March 2007 Pieter had the privilege of doing his vicariate studies at the Reformed Church of the North Shore under the supervision of Rev John Rogers, after which, at the age of 53, Pieter became a minister in the Reformed Churches of New Zealand – first in Foxton (for almost seven years), and since April 2014 in Wainuiomata.

Pieter and his wife, Annette, have a son, two daughters, and one grandson.
